Betting League of Legends Worlds on Thunderpick: a month of notes

I have watched League of Legends Worlds every autumn for years, usually with a group of friends and a lot of snacks. This year I decided to bet on it through the whole tournament, from the early stage to the final, and I used Thunderpick because its esports menu is the main part of the site.

The market depth was the first thing I noticed. Beyond the match winner, there were map handicaps, total maps, first blood, first dragon, first tower, and totals for kills on individual maps. For a game I know well, that gave me plenty of ways to bet on what I had actually seen in the teams' earlier matches.

Early in the tournament I made the usual mistake of betting on favourites at short odds. Strong regions beat weaker ones most of the time, but the prices reflected that and a single upset wiped out several wins. By the second week I had moved to map handicaps and kill totals, where my knowledge of team styles helped more.

Kill totals were my best market. Some teams play slow, controlled games with few fights. Others fight constantly. Patch changes matter too, and the meta at Worlds this year favoured early skirmishes. I adjusted my totals bets after the first few days once I saw how the patch was playing on stage.

Live betting between maps was useful in best-of-five series. After watching a team's draft and the first map, I had a much better read on the series than before it started. I kept it to one bet per series to avoid getting carried away.

Settlement was quick. Map bets settled within a few minutes of each game ending, and series bets shortly after. I withdrew my balance in crypto twice during the month, and both payments arrived the same day.

A couple of things bothered me. Limits on the smaller markets like first dragon were low, which is fair for niche bets. I also noticed the odds on match winners were sometimes slightly worse than at a bigger sportsbook, so I compared before placing large bets.

Before the tournament I looked at a page with Thunderpick's esports markets reviewed in some detail, which helped me set expectations on limits and payouts. After a month, my small profit came almost entirely from kill totals.
